Five Suggestions to Improve Your Website’s Readability

September 4th, 2007 No comments

Writing content is one thing, but websites that are difficult to read won’t help you get more business. Busy backgrounds, small fonts and texts shaded in similar colors to the background are just a few things to be wary of.

1. Make sure the font is large enough to read. Think about your target visitor. Even if your viewers are high-tech artsy types that use it themselves. Plan on fonts that allow everyone to see what you have to say without straining their eyes.

2. Make your content contrast with the site background. Black on white is the best example of contrast, but there are plenty of complementary colors that allow you to deliver your message without looking like a generic can of peas.

3. Ad some space between the lines. Don’t lump your content into one compressed paragraph. Give it room to breath and roam on the page. (Without confusion the website visitor) Use the line-spacing directive in CSS to allow for a bit of elbow room.

4. Break text up into chunks. Regardless of what you have to say, visitors to your site don’t want to read an enormous page of text. Break the content into manageable pages or sections and use headlines or bullets to deliver you message. Plan for people who scan versus read the copy of your website. 5. Format your text using CSS. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are great for a number of reasons. – Using one style sheet you’re able to control how all text looks on your website. When you are ready to change formatting, making that change on a single file makes updating fonts a snap.

Making Your Website Work For Your Business

August 27th, 2007 No comments

There are all types of technology used to design and develop websites. When creating a business website, many designers are focused on the design or technology rather than the business goals of thesmall-business-website-design site being created. Here are three rules that focus on the why rather than the how.

1. Concentrate on Content.
We’ve all heard that “Content is King.” Well developed content gets visitors to your site and gives them the information they need to make a purchasing decision.

2. Focus on clear navigation.
What you may use as industry jargon may not be the same as your potential client. Use the most accepted terms in your navigation.

3. Use your friends, family, and customers to test your site’s usability.
I always wonder if my grandmother can find the relevant content to help me determine if the navigation is clear.
