tablet-and-smartphone-300x236There’s no doubt that ecommerce website design has focused heavily on mobile usage over the last 5 years. Then, a little over 2 years ago, the iPad hit the market and completely changed the game. Tablets are growing faster than ever and you need to make sure people visiting your site from one of the many devices available arrive at an attractive, user-friendly site designed specifically for tablets.

Recently, Adobe Digital Index analyzed data from over 23 million website visits to over 325 major brands in North America, Western Europe, and Asia. We’ve boiled down the report and come up with 3 compelling reasons your ecommerce site needs to be mobile-friendly now.

1. Tablet traffic will soon surpass smartphone traffic

Within the first 4 years of their release, the share of total website visits from tablets grew 10 times faster than that from smartphones. Adobe projects that if this rate of growth keeps up, visits from tablets will surpass those form smartphones within a year, and by the end of 2014 will account for more than 10% of total website visits.

2. Tablet visits go up on weekends

Because tablets are used for fun, they’re used more on the weekends than any other device. Tablets are the device of choice for weekend online shopping, surpassing both smartphones and PCs by more than 10 percentage points.

3. Tablet users tend to spend more money

A handful of studies, including the Adobe report, confirm that tablet owners have more money, and they spend it. According to another Adobe report, mobile users spend an average of $80 per order. Orders from PCs average around $102, but tablets have them both beat. Tablet users average orders of $123. On top of that, conversion rates on tablets rival those of PCs, with only a fraction of a percent difference between them.

You can create unique ecommerce designs for each device from which visitors will access your site. Responsive ecommerce development is another option. An ecommerce design firm can create a design that, as the name suggests, responds to the visitor based on the device they are using, giving them the best experience possible.

It’s obvious that the tablet is only going to keep changing the game. Is your ecommerce design good enough?
