6 SEO Content Rules for Dummies

By

content-300x200Ok, we know you’re no dummy. But when it comes to SEO, even the experts have to stay on their toes to keep up with the changing game. However, there’s one thing that’s never changed: content. Of all the valuable SEO techniques you could utilize, content is one that’s always been effective, albeit in varying degrees. But content has never been more important than right now.

Here are our top 6 tips for getting the most Search Engine Optimization value out of your content.

1. Less is More

If you have great content, you don’t need to have heaps of it. If your website is full of low-quality blog posts and articles, your readers will notice – and so will search engines. Offer real value to your customers with your content, not just quantity.

2. Expand Your Link Profile

A lot of people are tempted to link only to their best-selling items or services, but going overboard could qualify you as over-optimized. Google likes to see diverse anchor text and link profiles. Above all, make sure your internal linking (sharing a link to a page within your own site) is natural and easy to read.

3. Establish Maximum Keyword Density

We’ve all seen those web pages that are stuffed with keywords; it’s painfully obvious, difficult to read, and often topically irrelevant. Establish a maximum keyword density to avoid turning your readers off and hurting your ranking. For example, 1% in a 500-word article would be about 5 keyword mentions.

4. Optimize Your Meta Data

Optimizing your Meta content is one semi-technical thing you can do yourself to improve your SEO. Meta Data is what shows up on the search engine results page. Your Meta Title is the headline a searcher sees and it should be 70 characters or less. The Meta Description – the short blurb of text below the headline – should max out at 160 characters.

5. Don’t Forget Your Images

Search engines can’t see your images, they can only read the filenames, so remember to change the generic letters-and-numbers to something descriptive in the Alt Text and File Name. Just don’t go crazy- remember to keep it natural.

6. Use Google Authorship

Google Authorship is a relatively new feature that marries outstanding, relevant content with your ranking. With Authorship, your content shows up in google results with an Author Rich Snippet including your photo, name, and a link to more of your content. It’s a great way to establish yourself as an authority, stand out from other results, and demonstrate transparency.

SEO and content were meant to be together. We hope these 6 tips will help you make the most of your content and boost your rankings!
